Overview

Two types, two markets. The short Beit Alpha — what the Turkish trade simply calls çengelköy or short cucumber — is 12 to 16 cm, thin-skinned, seedless and unwaxed, and it is the standard across Turkey, the Balkans and the Gulf. The long Dutch type at 30 to 35 cm is grown for northern European retail and ships shrink-wrapped.

Cucumber is the most ethylene-sensitive product in our whole range. Exposure to even low concentrations causes rapid yellowing and softening, which means it cannot share a container with apple, melon, tomato or any climacteric fruit. This gets missed on consolidated loads more often than any other mistake.

It is also chilling-sensitive: below +10 °C it develops water-soaked pitting within a few days. Reefers run +11 °C.
