Carrot and apple should never share a container
Ethylene from apple drives isocoumarin formation in carrot, and the crop turns genuinely bitter. It is the most common cause of a bitterness claim on an otherwise sound load.

Ethylene is the most under-managed variable in mixed loads, and the carrot-and-apple pairing is the clearest case of why it matters.
Apple is a heavy ethylene producer. Carrot exposed to ethylene synthesises isocoumarin, a phenolic compound that makes the root genuinely, measurably bitter. The carrot shows no external sign — it grades, washes and packs normally — and the complaint arrives at the far end from a buyer who assumes they were sent a poor crop.
The same logic rules out apple with kiwi, with leafy vegetables, and with any climacteric fruit intended to arrive unripe. Cucumber is the most ethylene-sensitive line in our range and yellows rapidly on a mixed load with apple, melon or tomato.
